“Going through the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program gave me the confidence and support I needed to succeed in a male-dominated industry, welding. My life would be a lot different without JMG,” expressed alumna Kalysta Sormunen.
Although Kalysta credits JMG for building her confidence and providing support, her internal strength and determination empowered her to become one of the most sought-after welders from the Marquette-Alger Middle College program. As a graduate of the College and of Northern Michigan University, Kalysta holds both a welding certificate and an Associate’s Degree in Industrial Maintenance.
Although she got knocked down by life’s circumstances on several occasions, each time she rose stronger and more determined to achieve the future she imagined for herself. Her JMG Specialist helped her stick to the plan no matter what she experienced on her journey.
Kalysta is now a member of the Carpenters and Millwrights Local 1510 and is making her mark as a trailblazer for other women who would like to pursue a career in welding. We are excited to watch her succeed and continue to do great things for the welding community as she achieves her future beyond imagination.
