2019 Alumnus of the Year, Lewis Williams- Highlight on Careers in Energy Week

“I have been fortunate to have always remained in contact with Lewis and I consider myself to be very blessed to know him. He is all that we look for in a JMG participant and I know that he is busy making the world a better place. He is always looking out for his family and friends and sharing his good fortune and life experience.” Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation JMG Specialist, Carolyn Miller.

Lewis Williams, a Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) Alumnus from Cody High School, didn’t let the barriers he faced stop him from building a brighter future for himself. His desire to improve himself and his environment was evident from the moment he entered the JMG program, and with the help of his JMG specialist, Carolyn Miller, he did just that.

Since 2018, Lewis has worked for DTE Energy as a maintenance apprentice in gas line operations. JMG provided him with the pathway to his future with DTE. He was chosen to participate in the DTE Energy apprenticeship program, completed the Power and Trades Pathway courses at Henry Ford Community College, and worked for two summers with DTE, before being hired full time upon graduation.

During his time with JMG, Lewis had the opportunity to attend the National Student Leadership Academy (NSLA) in Washington DC, which exposed him to new experiences and ignited his motivation to pursue a meaningful career path. And he was recognized for his leadership skills and success in the program by being awarded the 2019 JMG Alumnus of the Year. His story was so inspiring that he was featured in the Story of JMG video to show the true impact of the JMG program.

October 17-21 is Careers in Energy Week and we are excited to highlight Lewis and his accomplishments in the energy industry. Lewis will be joining the panel at our next Coffee with a Purpose event, YOUth and the Future of Careers in Energy, on October 20, 9:00-10:00 am. We hope you will watch and learn from our panelists.
