Culinary Arts Month Spotlight: Maddy Stange’s Journey from Passion to Pastry

ree

In honor of National Culinary Arts Month, we’re proud to highlight the journey of Maddy Stange—a 2022 Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) alumna from Cadillac High School whose love for baking turned into a thriving business and a bold vision for the future.

Maddy discovered her passion early on, launching her own business, Maddy Cakes, at just 14 years old. Despite being naturally shy, she challenged herself daily—waking up early to bake before class, selling her cupcakes at the Cadillac Farmers Market, and volunteering in her community.

When Maddy joined JMG during her senior year, she found new ways to build confidence and leadership. With support from her JMG specialist, Kim Benz, Maddy took part in Legislative Day, tutored elementary students, supported Project Christmas, and donated her baked goods to local fundraisers. Through JMG, she set college and career goals, applied for scholarships, and strengthened her entrepreneurial skills.

“JMG has instilled in me the importance of following your passion and how to manage all of the steps to succeed in a career. The connections with my JMG peers have proven to be a great asset as I move through my career endeavors. I am very appreciative of the opportunities JMG has provided to me and Michigan youth,” – Maddy shared.

Her determination and talent opened new doors: Maddy earned a $5,000 Food Hugs scholarship designed to empower women in the culinary industry and was accepted to Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island to pursue a degree in Baking & Pastry Arts and Entrepreneurship. Today, she’s taking her journey even further—studying abroad in France to deepen her craft and gain new cultural perspectives.

Looking ahead, Maddy’s dream is to return to her hometown of Cadillac and grow Maddy Cakes into a successful local bakery. Her story is a perfect celebration of National Culinary Arts Month, showcasing how passion, perseverance, and the right support can help young people turn creativity into career success.
