In the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) Program, we believe leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about influence, service, and the courage to lift others up. During Leadership Day, part of Jobs for America’s Graduates Career Association (JAG CA) Week, members of our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) explored what it truly means to lead within the JMG program and beyond.
JAG CA Week is a week-long celebration of youth leadership and JAG programming being led by JAG’s National Career Association. Each day of the week is themed to highlight key elements of the JAG program.
Riley Brown is a JMG Alumnus from the Networks Northwest North Ed CTC Program. She is currently attending Grand Valley State University and serves as the Youth Advisory Council President. Her journey through JMG has shaped the way she leads today, and she shared powerful reflections on how leadership shows up in everyday actions.
“In JMG, leadership is essential because it drives change and inspires growth in both individuals and communities. Strong leaders create space for others to succeed and help shape environments where everyone can thrive.”
Here are Riley’s five leadership tips for youth who want to make a difference:
Network Intentionally
To become a better servant leader, take every opportunity to connect with others. Building a network allows you to form meaningful relationships, learn from diverse perspectives, and open doors for collaboration. The stronger your connections, the more effective you can be in serving those you represent
Listen and Comprehend
Great leaders don’t just hear people - they truly listen and understand. When you take time to comprehend what others are saying, you make them feel valued and respected. This kind of active listening builds trust and promotes real change.
Connect, Encourage, and Build Relationships
Leadership is about people. A great leader uplifts others, creates bonds, and motivates their team to reach shared goals. By encouraging and connecting those around you, you strengthen the entire community.
Communicate Clearly
Effective communication is key to successful leadership. Leaders must express their ideas and goals clearly while also explaining how those goals benefit others. Open, honest communication inspires confidence and unity.
Shape a Positive Environment
As a leader, the environment you create reflects both your character and the people you represent. Strive a positive environment. As a leader, the environment you create reflects both your character and the people you represent. Strive to build a space where respect, accountability, and encouragement are the norm - because great environments produce great leaders.
Leading with Purpose
Riley’s leadership reminds us that anyone can make an impact when they lead with intention, empathy, and integrity. Leadership Day is just one example of how JMG empowers youth to discover their voice and step confidently into their future.
