Alex Kozlowski’s path to success has been anything but traditional—but it’s a journey defined by resilience, determination, and steady growth. After being diagnosed with a life-threatening condition in elementary school, Alex transitioned from public school to homeschooling as he focused on recovery. At the beginning of his junior year, when he made the decision to return to a traditional school setting, he faced a major setback: the work he completed during homeschooling did not transfer for credit. Rather than becoming discouraged, Alex enrolled at Quest Alternative High School with a goal of rebuilding—and he did just that. In just two and a half years, he recovered all of his credits and is now on track to graduate with the class of 2026.
Since joining Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), Alex has become a reliable and respected leader within his program. Elected by his peers as Vice President of the Career Association, he consistently steps up to support both his specialist and fellow students. Known for his calm demeanor and strong interpersonal skills, Alex brings people together in an environment where that doesn’t always come easily. Whether helping lead school-wide activities like Quest’s Thanksgiving Breakfast or collaborating across different social groups, he is a positive and steady presence.
Alex has taken full advantage of opportunities to grow both inside and outside the classroom. He has completed a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in IT Net and actively participates in JMG leadership and service activities, including attending Legislative Day. Through these experiences, he has developed confidence in his abilities and a clearer understanding of his strengths—something that did not always come naturally to him.
JMG has played a key role in helping Alex see beyond comparisons and focus on his individual progress. With the support of his JMG specialist, Katie Chrismer, he has built the confidence to make decisions about his future and pursue his goals with intention. His quiet determination and willingness to step in when needed have made him not only successful academically, but also an invaluable member of his school community.
Chrismer shared, “Alex has a quiet steadiness that has helped him overcome barriers and stay focused on his goals. He leads by example and is someone others naturally look to for support. He truly represents what we hope for all of our JMG youth.”
This fall, Alex plans to attend Mott Community College to pursue a degree in cybersecurity, continuing to build a future grounded in hard work and perseverance.
Alex’s story is a powerful example of what it means to stay committed, even when the path forward isn’t easy. His reliability, leadership, and resilience make him truly deserving of this recognition.
Congratulations, Alex, on being recognized as the East Michigan Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2026 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
