Aspen Evans has faced significant challenges growing up, navigating difficult family circumstances that placed adult responsibilities on her shoulders at a very young age. Despite these obstacles, she has consistently demonstrated resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a positive impact in her community.

When Aspen joined Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) at Central Lake High School, she quickly became a standout participant. Balancing four sports, dual enrollment courses, National Honor Society (NHS) responsibilities, and part-time work at Short’s Brewing Company, she embraced every opportunity JMG provided. She recruited peers to the program, helped plan events, and volunteered her time—often taking on leadership responsibilities.

Through JMG, Aspen discovered new passions and explored career pathways. A job shadow with a professional photographer solidified her interest in media, design, and photography, guiding her future plans for postsecondary education. She is now preparing to attend Northern Michigan University this fall, with aspirations to run track and pursue studies in photography and marketing.

Aspen’s leadership extends beyond academics. She regularly volunteers with both JMG and NHS, participates in community service activities, and models a spirit of service learning for her peers. Whether presenting to fellow students, co-planning events, or helping new participants feel welcome, she demonstrates initiative, dedication, and a commitment to making every day better than the last.

Reflecting on her journey, JMG specialist Josh Todd shared, “Aspen embodies the value of being inspirational. No matter what obstacles she faces, she continuously pushes forward and leads by example, putting her own challenges aside to support others.”

Aspen’s story is a powerful example of how determination, community engagement, and the right support can transform challenges into opportunities. She has grown academically, socially, and professionally, while building the skills and confidence needed for a bright future.

Congratulations, Aspen, on being recognized as the Northwest Michigan Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2026 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
