August joined the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program at just 16 years old as a student in the Lansing School District GED program. Quiet and shy at first, she faced personal challenges but quickly found support and encouragement through her JMG specialist, Charron Basey, who helped create a safe and nurturing environment where August could grow in confidence and find her voice.

Through JMG, August not only strengthened her academic foundation but also discovered her potential as a leader. She participated in statewide events such as the Career Development Conference, where she earned 3rd place in the Creative Problem Solving competition, and Legislative Day 2023, where she confidently engaged with legislators and shared her story. These experiences sparked a transformation, leading her to deliver speeches at her graduation ceremony and later at the opening of Legislative Day 2024. In 2025, she returned once again to Legislative Day to introduce the panel, continuing to inspire fellow JMG youth.

August’s commitment to service and leadership extends beyond the stage. She has volunteered at the Career Development Conference and supported her community by assisting with the first annual blood drive through the Capital Area Lansing School District. She has remained actively involved with Youth Solutions as a member of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC), using her voice to uplift and encourage others. She has also supported several program launch celebrations even after graduating, continuing to show up for and encourage younger JMG participants as they begin their own journeys. Despite experiencing significant personal challenges—including physical health issues, seizures, and a serious car accident that resulted in her no longer being able to drive—August has continued to persevere and remain present in her commitments, demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination.

After completing her GED, August began her college journey at Lansing Community College, where she earned a remarkable 4.0 GPA and ranked in the top 10% of her class, gaining recognition through multiple honor societies. Today, she continues her education as a sophomore at the University of Michigan–Flint, where she is studying psychology with a minor in music therapy while also balancing work.

Reflecting on her journey, August shared, “The atmosphere created by JMG is one of positivity and reassurance. I am eternally grateful for the uplifting support this program has given me.” Her story is a powerful example of resilience, growth, and the impact of mentorship. From a quiet student to a confident speaker and leader, August continues to inspire those around her.

Congratulations, August, on being recognized as the 2026 Notable Alumni of the Year at the Career Development Conference! We’re proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for what’s next!
