Bethany Byard has shown remarkable toughness and determination throughout her journey with Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG). Living independently while managing school, work, and personal responsibilities, she has faced significant barriers, including housing instability, transportation challenges, and employment hurdles. Despite these obstacles, Bethany remained committed to her growth and success.

When she joined JMG at the Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium Gaylord Service Center, Bethany set clear goals for herself. Her first priority was to graduate high school, and with guidance from her JMG specialist Seth Gruenberg, she worked diligently toward that milestone. Through the program, she participated in Legislative Day, attended hands-on experiences like glass blowing at North Central Michigan College (NCMC), and actively engaged in leadership and community service opportunities. Each experience helped Bethany gain confidence, overcome her shyness, and develop leadership skills.

Bethany’s growth extends beyond academics. She has explored her passion for entrepreneurship, creating plans to start a business in glass blowing, while balancing a full-time work schedule. She has also become a self-advocate, now volunteering to share her experiences publicly and encouraging other youth to engage with JMG. Her transformation from a reserved, hesitant student into a confident leader exemplifies the leadership development goal of the program.

Reflecting on Bethany’s journey, JMG specialist Seth Gruenberg shared, “Bethany has shown tremendous personal growth. She has gone from being shy and reserved to confidently advocating for herself and inspiring others with her story. Her perseverance and determination are truly inspirational.”

Bethany’s story is a powerful example of resilience, ambition, and leadership. She not only obtained her high school diploma but successfully transitioned into post-secondary training, all while maintaining work and personal responsibilities. Her dedication and achievements highlight the impact of JMG in helping youth overcome barriers, develop leadership skills, and step confidently into their future.

Congratulations, Bethany, on being recognized as the Northeast Michigan Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2026 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
