Iyanni Shyne’s journey with Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) began at a time when she was searching for direction. After graduating high school, she found herself navigating short-term jobs without a clear plan for her future. When an individual encouraged her to connect with the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program at West Michigan Works! Muskegon Service Center, Iyanni took a chance—one that would ultimately change the course of her life.
While Iyanni had a supportive family, she also faced personal challenges, including navigating her sense of belonging in the world and feeling a sense of disconnect at times. She often stayed within her comfort zone and lacked confidence in trying new things. Still, from the beginning, it was clear she wanted more for herself and was open to growth.
Through JMG, Iyanni found not only guidance, but a space where she felt supported and encouraged to explore her potential. A major turning point came during a summer work experience arranged through the program. Although it wasn’t the opportunity she originally expected, it introduced her to digital engagement and website development—sparking a passion for marketing she had never considered before.
Motivated by this discovery, Iyanni took a bold step forward and enrolled at Muskegon Community College, where she is now in her first year studying marketing. Her hard work and dedication quickly paid off—she earned a place on the Dean’s List during her first semester, a major milestone as a first-generation college student.
Beyond the classroom, Iyanni has embraced leadership opportunities within JMG. As a program manager and chapter officer, she helps plan events, create marketing materials, and support her peers. Once hesitant to speak in front of others, she now leads meetings, presents with confidence, and actively mentors new members—creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
Iyanni’s JMG specialist, Trena Winston, shared, “Iyanni has an incredible work ethic and a clear vision for her future. She leads by example and consistently demonstrates the kind of dedication that will help her succeed.”
Her growth extends beyond academics and leadership. Through JMG, Iyanni has built confidence, strengthened her sense of identity, and found a true sense of belonging. She has become a positive influence within her program, known for her uplifting energy and ability to make others feel supported.
Looking ahead, Iyanni plans to continue building her skills and experience in marketing, with the goal of becoming a digital marketing manager. She is focused on expanding her knowledge, growing her professional network, and creating opportunities that align with her passion.
Iyanni’s journey is a powerful example of how determination, support, and opportunity can transform uncertainty into purpose. Her story reflects the impact of JMG in helping young people discover their path, build confidence, and step into their future as leaders.
Congratulations, Iyanni, on this well-deserved recognition. We are so proud of you and excited for all that lies ahead!
