Meet Jeremiah Smith, Youth of the Year from Capital Area Michigan Works! Clinton County Service Center

Updated: May 8

Jeremiah’s life took a significant turn when he arrived at the Clinton County Michigan Works! Service Center and connected with Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) specialist, Elizabeth Curry. At first, his goal was simply to earn his GED, but through JMG he discovered opportunities, support, and a vision for a brighter future.

His path hasn’t been easy. As a freshman, Jeremiah dropped out of high school when his father was incarcerated, forcing him to move in with his grandfather. As a young father, he faced significant challenges providing for his child and maintaining employment due to unreliable transportation and childcare—but he refused to let these challenges define his future.

Through JMG, Jeremiah found more than just an education pathway; he found a mentor who believed in him. When he started the program, Jeremiah didn’t have a driver’s license or a car—two major barriers to securing better job opportunities. With the guidance of his JMG specialist, he earned his license and they’re now working together on budgeting and saving for a car.

A turning point came when Jeremiah attended a talent tour at the local fire department through JMG. Inspired by what he saw, he realized that becoming a paramedic was the future he wanted. Motivated by this discovery, he committed to finishing his GED and is on track to graduate in June so he can enroll in Lansing Community College’s paramedic program this fall. His dedication caught the attention of the fire chief, who offered to sponsor his training—including CPR certification, paramedic coursework, and firefighter training—once he graduates.

Beyond his career goals, Jeremiah has demonstrated outstanding leadership in JMG. He actively welcomes and mentors new students, shares his experiences with others, and participates in key JMG events such as Leadership Day and the Career Development Conference, where he excelled in the interview skills competition. He’s also passionate about giving back to his community, taking part in multiple service projects—including designing handmade Valentine’s Day cards for an assisted living center and helping a local bakery assemble Easter baskets for families in need.

Jeremiah’s JMG specialist, Elizabeth Curry, shared, "Jeremiah is a natural leader and people person who makes others feel welcomed, is always willing to help, embraces new experiences, shares his program adventures, seizes opportunities, self-assesses to stay on track with his goals, and despite facing challenges, remains determined to achieve his goals and stay kind."

Reflecting on his journey, Jeremiah shared, “Breaking free from my family’s cycle felt difficult, but this experience showed me a new path was within reach. It unlocked a new perspective and a renewed sense of possibility.”

Congratulations, Jeremiah, on your resilience, leadership, and determination. We are so proud of you and excited for the future ahead!
