Joshua Woollard, a senior at Central Lake High School, grew up in a rural, low-income community and once believed college wasn’t an option. But through the support of Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), he’s gained a clearer sense of direction and the confidence to pursue a future he’s excited about. With guidance from his JMG Specialist, Josh Todd, he began exploring different career paths, shifting his focus from teaching to political science.
JMG helped Josh build leadership skills and step outside his comfort zone. He was selected as one of just eight Michigan students to attend the National Student Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C.—an experience that broadened his perspective and sparked new ambition. Back at school, he shared what he learned with peers and embraced more leadership roles.
Despite facing challenges, Josh has remained committed to his growth. After applying to over 80 colleges, he’s officially chosen to attend Central Michigan University next year to study political science. JMG has not only provided him with resources for college and scholarship applications, but has also helped him believe in what’s possible. Josh’s journey is a powerful reminder that with encouragement, exploration, and support, young people can overcome barriers and chart a path to success.
Congratulations, Joshua, on being recognized as an Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2025 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
