LaQuesha Chambers, a senior at Southwestern Classical Academy, has transformed her high school experience with the support of Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG). After attending three different schools and facing frequent suspensions, LaQuesha struggled with disengagement and poor decision-making. Despite these challenges, her intelligence and potential stood out when she joined the JMG program at the start of her junior year.
Her JMG specialist, India Potts, quickly recognized LaQuesha’s capabilities and provided her with challenging assignments and leadership roles in the classroom to keep her motivated. She took on the responsibility of greeting classroom visitors and managing the distribution and collection of Chromebooks during her class hour, helping build her confidence and sense of responsibility. Over time, mentorship and consistent guidance helped LaQuesha develop stronger time management skills and re-engage in her education.
Since joining JMG, LaQuesha’s GPA has risen from 2.396 to honor roll status. She is now dual enrolled at Mott Community College while finishing her senior year, balancing college-level coursework with her high school responsibilities. She was accepted to eight colleges and is proud of her options as she makes her final decision on where to attend this fall. She plans to major in political science and eventually become an attorney. Her journey is a testament to the power of second chances, and she hopes to one day give back through pro bono legal work. LaQuesha’s story reflects the impact of JMG in helping youth unlock their potential and pursue bright futures.
Congratulations, LaQuesha, on being recognized as an Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2025 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
