Leonardo’s journey took a remarkable turn when he discovered Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) after seeing a poster in his school hallway. New to the United States and eager to find his place, he scanned the QR code, completed the application, and followed up to ensure he could join the program. From that moment on, Leonardo fully embraced every opportunity JMG had to offer.
His path hasn’t been easy. Just two years ago, Leonardo immigrated from Cuba without speaking English and had to quickly adapt to a new education system, culture, and way of life. With only his mother and one other family member in the country, he has had to navigate school, work, and future opportunities largely on his own—but he has approached each challenge with determination and a willingness to grow.
Through JMG, Leonardo found more than just guidance; he found a space to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and connect with others. In a short amount of time, he learned English and now uses his skills to help translate for fellow students, supporting others who are navigating similar experiences.
A turning point came when Leonardo began his co-op position at a neighboring elementary school—his first job. There, he works with students in grades K–5, supporting academic learning, social-emotional development, and daily classroom activities. Known for his strong work ethic, Leonardo goes above and beyond by volunteering additional time, assisting teachers and staff, and continuing to help even after completing his required hours. His impact has been widely recognized, with school leadership praising both his attitude and dedication.
Beyond his work experience, Leonardo has demonstrated outstanding leadership within JMG. As a member of the executive board leadership team, he plays an active role in planning events and initiatives, including helping lead discussions for a recent talent tour. He also serves as a peer mentor, welcoming new students, helping them feel comfortable, and encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones by leading through example.
Leonardo’s JMG specialist, Steven Lopez, shared, “Leonardo has absorbed the JMG experience like it’s a million dollars. He’s eager, motivated, and takes full advantage of every opportunity.”
Through additional opportunities like the United Mentoring Program, Leonardo has continued to grow professionally, learning how to support younger students and even helping Steven and the Lansing School District staff implement the program at other schools. These experiences have strengthened his confidence, leadership, and sense of purpose.
Looking ahead, Leonardo is focused on becoming a first-generation college student and building a stable future for himself and his family. He is currently a senior and will graduate this June, and his career path is focused on becoming a business owner and pursuing management. While he continues to explore his options, his determination and positive outlook will continue to guide him forward.
Congratulations, Leonardo, on your resilience, leadership, and determination. We are so proud of you and excited for the future ahead!
