As a first-generation American and one of the only Bengali students at Pershing High School, MD struggled with building relationships and developing social skills. Throughout high school, he had to balance meeting his academic goals while also playing a key role in caring for his father.
MD’s path took a pivotal turn when he joined the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program during his junior and senior years of high school. Although he had always focused on academics—ultimately becoming valedictorian—JMG helped him step outside his comfort zone and build stronger relationships, enhancing both his social skills and personal growth.
Though unsure at first how he would fit into the program, MD embraced every opportunity JMG had to offer. He took on leadership roles, including managing the program's social media, planning events, presenting to peers and adults, and engaging in community service and career exploration activities. One of the highlights of his time in JMG was winning an award at the Career Development Conference (CDC)—a moment that validated all his hard work and showed him the importance of non-academic achievements.
Through his participation in the mentorship program with Big Brothers and Ally Financial as part of JMG, MD not only demonstrated his commitment to service but also learned the importance of mentorship—a lesson he continues to apply in his own life. When JMG provided MD the opportunity to meet Michigan Representative Donovan McKinney, their initial connection blossomed into a professional mentoring relationship. Rep. McKinney and MD now maintain regular communication, which has significantly contributed to MD’s personal and professional growth.
As he navigates his first year at the University of Michigan, pursuing a degree in engineering, MD’s future is looking bright. Thanks to his experiences in JMG, MD has not only successfully transitioned to post-secondary education, but has done so as a member of the prestigious Honors College in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at one of the top universities in the country. He continues to seek out opportunities, utilize campus resources, and foster meaningful connections within the community.
MD continues to have a strong relationship with his JMG Specialist, Carolyn Miller. When he moved into his dorm room and found himself alone on campus for the first time, one of his first phone calls was to Carolyn—checking in on her even as he navigated his own transition far from home. This moment underscored their deep connection and his instinct to put others first, reinforcing the importance of a strong support system during times of change.
"JMG has impacted me in many very important ways with all the opportunities they have for us. From job shadowing and seeing all sorts of different jobs we could apply for, helping build my resume and LinkedIn profile, to all the connections we make in the program - JMG has been so important to me!," MD said, reflecting on his journey.
Carolyn added, “MD is a strong role model to his friends, always lifting them up and helping them shine while never stopping his own growth journey.”
MD is proud of his accomplishments, including his ability to thrive in college as a first-generation student and his success in overcoming social and academic challenges. He continues to mentor others in the program, offering the same support and encouragement he received through JMG.
MD’s journey exemplifies the power of mentorship, personal growth, and resilience. Congratulations, MD, on all your achievements and the bright future ahead!
