Meet Michael Holland, Exemplary Youth of the Year from Horizons Alternative High School, a Program of Upper Peninsula Michigan Works!

Michael Holland faced significant challenges while working to complete high school. Balancing school, financial responsibilities, unstable living situations, and the demands of his job at Dollar General, he often carried the weight of adult responsibilities at a young age. At one point, the stress became overwhelming, and Michael stepped away as he worked through personal challenges, making it difficult to stay on track toward graduation.
However, when he reconnected with Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), things began to change. With support from his JMG specialist, Debbie Bean, Michael refocused on his goals and committed to building a more stable future. He returned to school with determination, ultimately graduating on time with his class.
Through JMG, Michael gained access to critical resources and opportunities that helped him take the next steps forward. He earned his driver’s license, secured reliable transportation, and participated in a work-based learning experience where he developed hands-on skills in manufacturing and CNC work. After initially applying for a janitorial position, Michael’s strong work ethic stood out, and he was offered a role as a score operator at Calumet Electronics. His dedication quickly paid off—he increased his hourly wage and continues to grow in his position.
Michael is now thriving in his role, building a career and gaining valuable experience in a high-demand field. Looking ahead, he plans to continue growing with the company while working toward greater independence and supporting his family. His journey is a powerful example of how resilience, determination, and the right support can help young people overcome obstacles and create lasting success.
