This month, we’re proud to recognize Joe Davis, a dedicated Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) specialist with the Family Literacy Center in Lapeer, a program of GST Michigan Works! Joe brings decades of leadership, service, and real-world experience to his role and will celebrate two years as a JMG specialist this July. He is driven by a deep commitment to helping young people build confidence, overcome barriers, and realize their full potential.

Before joining JMG, Joe built a dynamic career rooted in service. He served in the military and was stationed in Germany, where he earned a degree in Construction Management in German. After completing his service, he worked for the German government for six years before returning to the United States. He then dedicated 20 years to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, retiring after two decades of service. He later spent two years in the corporate world before realizing his passion was still working directly with youth.

During his final 10 years with the Sheriff’s Office, Joe ran a program for youth that focused on accountability, mentorship, and follow-up support. That experience ultimately inspired him to become a JMG Specialist. He saw firsthand how early intervention, structure, and genuine encouragement can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

What motivates Joe most is watching students grow in confidence. Many youth enter the program unsure of themselves and feeling limited by their circumstances. “A lot of them feel like they’re just a product of their environment,” Joe shared. “When they come into the program, they start to see that’s not what they have to settle for.” Seeing students begin to believe in themselves — and then act on that belief — is what fuels his work.

One of Joe’s most meaningful recent memories involves a young man experiencing homelessness who came to the program to pursue his GED. He doubted both the program and himself. Within just four weeks, he secured employment, obtained a vehicle through a Michigan Works! grant, began attending weekly life skills classes, created a promotional video for JMG, and even spoke in front of a board — something he would not have imagined doing weeks earlier. Watching that transformation has been incredibly rewarding.

Joe believes one of the biggest challenges facing youth today is a lack of consistent support and guidance. Through JMG, he creates a safe, supportive environment where youth feel heard, valued, and empowered. His life skills sessions are rooted in real-life experience rather than lectures, and youth build strong peer connections that foster accountability and encouragement.

One of the greatest joys of Joe’s role is celebrating every milestone — whether it’s passing a GED practice test, speaking up in class, or landing a first job. He sets high expectations while reminding youth that success is earned through effort, and he is there to support them every step of the way.

Outside of work, Joe enjoys spending time with his grandkids, renovating his home, and working on cars. He also recently adopted a rescue dog who, he jokes, is already the boss of the house.

Congratulations, Joe, on being named our March Specialist of the Month! Thank you for your authenticity, leadership, and unwavering dedication to helping Michigan’s youth build brighter futures.

Nominations are open to ALL, including our employer partners! If you know a phenomenal specialist, we encourage you to [nominate them here] for our April Specialist of the Month.
