Paige Buning, a senior at Escanaba Student Success Center, faced many challenges when she started her senior year. Struggling with transportation, attendance, and academic performance, Paige had previously dropped out of public school, lacked work experience, and was uncertain about her future.
However, when she joined Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), things began to turn around. With support from her JMG specialist, Sam Frizzell, Paige began showing up consistently, improving her grades, and regaining confidence. Sam helped her set goals, learn essential workplace skills, and prepare for mock interviews. When Paige expressed interest in a Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunity, JMG helped her secure a placement at We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym. Her dedication paid off—the gym’s owners were so impressed that they offered her a job after graduation.
She is excelling in her WBL role, and has a renewed sense of confidence and independence. Looking ahead, Paige is determined to pursue a career in Social Work/Child Welfare and is considering further studies at Bay College. Her story is a powerful example of how with the right support, young people can overcome obstacles and build a successful future.
Congratulations, Paige, on being recognized as an Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2025 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
