Riley Brown’s journey is a powerful example of courage, leadership, and an unshakable commitment to lifting others up. She was first introduced to and joined the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program as a junior at Northwest Ed Career Tech, where she was enrolled in the Automotive Repair program—an experience that helped shape her confidence and career direction. A 2024 graduate of Glen Lake High School, Riley is now attending Grand Valley State University, where she is pursuing a degree in education and already gaining hands-on experience working with fourth-grade students. Her path forward is rooted in a deep passion for helping others succeed—something she has demonstrated time and time again. Even after graduating from the program, Riley has remained deeply connected to JMG, continuing to give back as the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) President.
Throughout her time in the program, Riley found opportunities to grow into her leadership potential thanks to the support of her JMG specialist, Lisa Baldyga. She became deeply involved in JMG activities, from planning events and leading projects to mentoring her peers and representing her program at the state and national levels. Riley attended Leadership Day, Legislative Day, and both the state and national Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Career Development Conferences—where she achieved national recognition, placing in the top 16 for JAG President and earning first place in the Prepared Speech competition.
Early on in the JMG program, Riley was exposed to a wide range of career pathways. This allowed Riley to experience and learn more about careers she hadn't considered before, including health care and education. What stood out most was her natural ability to support and guide her peers, along with the times she stepped outside her comfort zone at the JAG National Student Leadership Academy and the JAG National Career Development Conference. Combined with the consistent encouragement from JMG/Youth Solutions advisors, as well as the support of her close friends and family, these experiences left a lasting impression and ultimately inspired her to pursue a career in teaching.
Her impact extended far beyond JMG events. Riley founded peer support initiatives at her high school, including a Giving Closet and student-led support groups—both of which continue to serve students today. She consistently sought out classmates who were struggling, offering guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.
“Riley has an unbreakable spirit,” Baldyga shared. “She leads with purpose, serves others without hesitation, and continues to rise above every challenge she faces.”
Throughout her journey, Riley has faced significant personal challenges, including serious health obstacles, yet she has never allowed them to define her. Instead, she has approached each barrier with resilience, determination, and a growth mindset—continuing to excel academically.
Today, Riley continues to build on that foundation. While balancing college coursework and a part-time job, she remains focused on her long-term goal of becoming a teacher, and one day, a JMG specialist, so she can give back to the program that helped shape her path. She is also pursuing opportunities to mentor youth, including applying to work at a summer camp supporting younger students. Even after graduating from the program, Riley has remained deeply connected to Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), continuing to give back as the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) President.
Riley’s story is a testament to the lasting impact of JMG. Her ability to turn adversity into action, lead with compassion, and remain steadfast in her goals has made her a role model for her peers and community.
Congratulations, Riley, on being named Alumni of the Year! Your strength, leadership, and dedication to others continue to inspire, and we can’t wait to see the difference you’ll make in the lives of future students.
