Skye Hess’s journey with Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) is defined by resilience, perseverance, and the courage to create her own path. During high school, she faced significant personal and financial hardships after her grandmother passed away and her mother lost her job. Recognizing that a traditional high school path was no longer the best fit for her circumstances, Skye made the brave decision to pursue her GED.
With the support and guidance of JMG specialist Benjamin Leverette, Skye found stability and encouragement. Through mentorship, career development, and consistent check-ins, she successfully completed her GED and began to envision a meaningful future. Skye discovered a passion for education, inspired by teachers and mentors who impacted her life, and has set her sights on becoming a high school teacher. She is now enrolled at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, preparing to pursue her studies in education, having already completed orientation and nearly finalized her FAFSA.
Skye balances her educational goals with work, currently employed at Jimmy John’s, while continuing to engage with JMG during the follow-up phase. She has also participated in extracurricular activities and community organizations, demonstrating leadership and commitment to giving back. Her journey highlights the impact of JMG’s support system—helping her build confidence, overcome obstacles, and set a course for her future.
Reflecting on her journey, JMG specialist Ben Leverette shared, “Skye’s tenacity, perseverance, and willingness to try new things are unmatched. She has faced barriers that would have stopped many, yet she continues to push forward with grace and determination.”
Skye’s story is more than just completing her GED or enrolling in college—it is a story of resilience, self-advocacy, and leadership. She has transformed challenges into opportunities, gaining skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
Congratulations, Skye, on being recognized as the West Michigan Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2026 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
