Meet Xander Helenius, Exemplary Youth of the Year from Northview Next Career Center

After losing his father to cancer at 13, Xander Helenius struggled with grief while balancing school, sports, and his future aspirations. With a natural enthusiasm and positive spirit, he sometimes found it difficult to channel his energy productively. Through Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) at Northview Next Career Center and the support of his JMG specialist, Nick Smith, Xander gained mentorship, structure, and career exploration opportunities that helped him grow into a confident leader. Over the course of four years, JMG provided Xander with the space to be himself and the guidance to turn his potential into progress. He took on JMG leadership roles, secured his first job, and is thriving in an EMT program while excelling as a three-sport athlete. Now preparing to graduate, Xander will be the first student to complete all four years of JMG at NNCC. In the fall, he will attend Cornerstone University as a student-athlete in track and field, studying exercise science. His journey exemplifies perseverance, personal growth, and the impact of JMG in helping youth turn challenges into opportunities.

Congratulations, Xander, on being recognized as an Exemplary Youth of the Year at the 2025 Career Development Conference! We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and excited for the bright future ahead!
