Although last week's approved state budget saw a $515,500 reduction in its state allocation for Youth Solutions’ Jobs for Michigan’s (JMG) program, the organization views the finalized budget as a “win” for Michigan youth.
“We are deeply grateful to Governor Whitmer, the Legislature, and Director Susan Corbin of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and her team. While any reduction in funding creates challenges, we sincerely appreciate that the vast majority of our funding remains intact, and we intend on doing everything possible to ensure the impact on programming will be minimal,” said Roger Curtis, Executive Director of Youth Solutions.
Youth Solutions is also applauding additional budget increases and investments that directly benefit the students it serves across the state, including a 25% increase in at-risk funding for schools and additional funding for postsecondary and career and technical education (CTE) pathways. Many JMG youth engage in CTE opportunities while in high school and, after graduation, go on to pursue degrees, apprenticeships, and credentials as part of their career journey.
Despite the reduction, Youth Solutions remains optimistic and energized about the opportunities ahead. The organization remains committed to helping young people overcome barriers and achieve success in education, employment, and life.
“This outcome reflects the strong foundation of support for our mission and the value placed on the consistently strong results we’ve delivered for Michigan’s youth over the past 16 years,” Curtis continued. “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our community of supporters, advocates, and partners. Your dedication ensures we can continue this life-changing work for Michigan’s young people.”
