After high school, Candace Thornburg faced significant challenges. With little family support and no clear direction for her future, she felt disconnected from higher education and struggled to find stability. For more than a year, she bounced between part-time jobs, uncertain of how to move forward.
Her path began to change when she connected with the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program at the West Michigan Works! Allegan County Service Center. With the guidance and encouragement of her JMG specialist, Benjamin Leverette, Candace began to see new possibilities for herself.
Through JMG, Candace secured a full-time position at Walmart in Kalamazoo Township. Consistent employment gave her more than financial stability—it taught her responsibility and independence. She reached milestones she once thought impossible, including obtaining her own car and housing, while building the confidence and life skills needed to take control of her future.
Now, Candace is preparing to take her next big step. With encouragement from her JMG specialist, she plans to enroll in the Food Innovation Program at Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) beginning in Winter 2026. The program is a hands-on, campus-wide experience where students learn how local foods move from farms to markets, restaurants, and homes. Candace will gain practical experience in food logistics, procurement, and production, learning how to bring fresh, minimally processed foods from “root-to-table.” She hopes to explore the challenges and solutions of local food supply chains and eventually pursue a career as a procurement specialist—combining her passion for sustainable, natural foods with opportunities to travel.
“I never imagined going to college before JMG. Now I can see how an education can change my future, and I’m ready to make it happen.” Candace shared.
Candace’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and growth. With her hard work and the support of JMG, she has built a strong foundation and is shaping a future filled with stability and opportunity.
