Meet our July Specialist of the Month: Haley Rhoades

This month, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on Haley Rhoades, a dedicated and resourceful Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) specialist at the Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College. Haley has been with JMG for just over three years, bringing real-world experience, compassion, and a deep commitment to student success to her role.

Before joining JMG, Haley spent 18 years in higher education at Northern Michigan University, where she held a variety of roles that all centered around supporting students. She worked in Housing and Residence Life helping students adjust to living on their own, then moved into the Financial Aid Office for nine years. There, she helped families navigate the complex process of applying for aid, securing loans, and understanding repayment options.

This background shapes her approach today as she supports young people in developing college and career goals while minimizing the burden of student loan debt. “One of the greatest joys of my job is cheering for students as they complete their college education with minimal student loan debt and land jobs that allow them to confidently support themselves and plan for their future,” she says. 

Haley believes one of the biggest challenges facing youth today is the overwhelming pressure they place on themselves. “That pressure can lead to anxiety, burnout, and even mental health struggles,” she explains. “JMG’s approach involves personalized mentorship—we build genuine relationships with students, coaching them on key life and career skills and helping them make informed decisions about what comes next.” She describes JMG as a trusted guide—a steady support system that provides the stability, guidance, and encouragement youth need to thrive and transition into adulthood.

For Haley, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing her students succeed—whether it’s graduating from college, landing a job they’re proud of, or reaching financial independence. “That’s the most meaningful part of this work,” she says. “Seeing the relief and pride on their faces when they realize they can stand on their own is so rewarding.”

One of Haley’s favorite memories as a specialist is karaoke night at the Youth Solutions’ Summer Summit—a moment filled with laughter and connection. “It's easy to get caught up in the serious work of our roles, but that night was a fantastic reminder of the joy and camaraderie that makes JMG so special. Seeing everyone let loose, laugh, and genuinely surprise each other with their hidden vocal talents—or lack thereof—was priceless,” Haley shared.

Outside of her role, Haley makes the most of everything Marquette has to offer. She enjoys biking and walking along Lake Superior, braving cold water dips in the winter, and hunting for treasures at local rummage sales with her husband every Saturday.
