Meet Our New Youth Solutions Executive Director - Roger Curtis

On September 11, 2023, we welcomed Roger Curtis as Youth Solutions new Executive Director. Roger brings with him a wealth of experience in marketing and communications and a deep commitment to youth empowerment. Most recently, he served as the Vice President of Public Affairs for Consumers Energy, headquartered in Jackson, Michigan, where he oversaw community affairs, corporate communications, and corporate giving functions. Before his role at Consumers Energy, Roger served as the Director of the Michigan Department of Talent and Economic Development (TED), appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in November 2016. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in strengthening Michigan's workforce and talent development programs, including the launch of several educational initiatives.

As a long-time business operator and a member of Governor Snyder’s 21st Century Michigan Education Commission and his local school board, Roger has a deep understanding for the required coordination and cooperation on talent between employers and educators. His recognition that building talent is a key factor in Michigan’s efforts to strengthen its economy and communities led to his appointment in state talent leadership. As TED Director, Roger led the $100 million Marshall Plan for Talent investment in the state’s workforce and education systems. He also led the Michigan Career Pathways Alliance and Going PRO in Michigan initiatives, sat on the board of the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and the Michigan Land Bank, and formerly served on the Michigan Tourism Commission.

Roger’s journey with Youth Solutions began in 2016 when he was with TED, and he played a pivotal role in supporting the growth and funding for Jobs for Michigan's Graduates (JMG), the premier program of Youth Solutions. In 2018, he joined Youth Solutions' board of directors, serving for nearly five years. His dedication to the organization continued as he took on the role of a consultant in June before accepting his current position as Executive Director. Roger is grateful for the opportunity to join the Youth Solutions team to continue its legacy of success and expand its reach to serve even more of Michigan's youth.

Curtis expressed, "I love Youth Solutions. I love the people. I love the staff. I’ve known

them for years now. I love their mission, their vision and I just feel like we could do even more. I am excited to create lasting and meaningful change by providing every youth in Michigan a high-quality, career-focused education and a clear and actionable post-secondary pathway to a successful life. It is so special when one can connect passion and purpose like this!”

Beyond his professional life, he loves the outdoors, hiking, and going to concerts and music festivals with his wife and three kids. Recently, he and his family went to the Boston Calling Music Festival. Some of his favorite musical groups include the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, The National, Spoon and Cage the Elephant.
