Benton Harbor JMG Students Explore Career Paths Through Whirlpool Immersion Experience

The mentorship program between Benton Harbor High School’s Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program and Whirlpool Corporation continues to provide students with real-world career exposure and hands-on learning experiences. Through this partnership, students gain valuable insights into various career paths while developing essential skills for their future.

On March 4, JMG students from BHHS participated in a half-day immersion at Whirlpool Corporation, exploring a variety of career pathways offered within the company. Led by JMG Specialist Corey Sterling, more than 40 students engaged in team-based problem-solving activities, learned about the day to day operations within the company, and connected with Whirlpool employees to learn about their career journeys. This hands-on experience gave students the opportunity to build skills in collaboration, critical thinking, and professional communication.

“As part of the Whirlpool Corp. mentorship program, BHHS students recently dove into real-world scenarios across our Sales, Engineering, Communications and Innovation workstreams,” says Angie Seger, Director of Communications for Whirlpool Corporation. “The hands-on competitive event provided the students with a unique opportunity to gain experiences in creative problem-solving and teamwork that they can use as resume builders.”

This mentorship initiative, part of the 2024-25 Whirlpool Mentorship Program in partnership with Youth Solutions, is one of several planned experiences designed to support Benton Harbor High School students. By working alongside industry professionals, students can explore career options, discover their passions, and gain the confidence to define their career goals.
