Empowered to Lead: Vanessa’s Story of Growth Through JMG

ree

After graduating from high school with a class of just six students, Vanessa Groenewoud wasn’t sure what her future would hold. As an economically disadvantaged student with limited access to transportation and no prior job experience, she faced several barriers—including the pressure of being a first-generation college student. But everything changed when Vanessa joined the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program through the Onaway Service Center, a program of Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium.

With support and mentorship from her JMG specialist, Jeanie Flory, Vanessa began to discover her strengths and step into leadership roles that helped shape her path forward. Outspoken and determined, Vanessa quickly emerged as a natural leader—actively participating in Youth Solutions’ Leadership Days and Legislative Days, supporting her peers in attending the annual Career Development Conference, and consistently leading by example in the classroom and beyond.

Through JMG, Vanessa participated in a paid work experience that led to a full-time summer job, giving her essential skills in time management, communication, and accountability. These experiences gave her the confidence to take on even more responsibility—this summer, she worked two jobs while preparing for college in the fall.

Now a proud graduate of Mackinaw City High School, Vanessa is set to begin her next chapter at North Central Michigan College, where she plans to study to become a veterinarian. She looks forward to giving back by volunteering at her college and continuing to build on the leadership foundation she gained through JMG.

Vanessa’s story highlights how the right support and opportunities can empower a young person to unlock their full potential. With JMG by her side, she turned obstacles into stepping stones—and is now building a future full of purpose and possibility.
