Launching the Train-the-Trainer Model in Muskegon: A New Chapter for YS Foundations

ree

On August 18, Youth Solutions proudly launched its first Train-the-Trainer Model with Muskegon Area ISD (MAISD)—marking an exciting milestone for our Youth Solutions (YS) Foundations service. This groundbreaking model is designed to build local capacity, strengthen systems within schools, and ensure Michigan youth have access to sustainable, high-quality career development programming.

What is the Train-the-Trainer Model?

The Train-the-Trainer Model equips ISD/RESA service providers with the tools, resources, and phased training needed to implement the YS Foundations service directly with schools in their region. Designed as a multi-year process, the model allows for gradual implementation, ensuring service providers gain the confidence and skills to guide schools through each step—assessment, goal-setting, program development, implementation, and long-term sustainability.

Flexibility is at the core of this approach. Training, pacing, and support are tailored to fit each ISD/RESA’s staffing structure, goals, and capacity, with ongoing support from Youth Solutions staff to ensure fidelity and long-term success.

Muskegon’s Commitment to Career Development

Led by Megan Byard-Karaba, Career and College Readiness Program Director, the MAISD Career and College Readiness (CCR) team is taking a big step toward a more systematic approach to career development in Muskegon County. Through 22 hours of professional development, the team will gain the tools to fully integrate YS Foundations across their schools. Once trained, the CCR team will coach local educators, creating a system where career development is locally led and owned.

The countywide rollout begins in 2025–2026 with two pilot district cohorts, each selected through readiness assessments and supported with mini-grants. Over time, additional districts will join annual cohorts, creating a multiplier effect that allows a single ISD team to impact hundreds of teachers and thousands of students. By placing the CCR team at the center, Muskegon ISD is not only ensuring sustainability but also modeling how ISDs across Michigan can lead systemic, career-connected learning at scale.

Why This Matters

Through this partnership, MAISD and Youth Solutions are laying the foundation for sustainable, multi-year career development programs that prioritize self-awareness, exploration, and future planning for students from kindergarten through high school. This work positions Muskegon County as a leader in the statewide expansion of our YS Foundations Train-the-Trainer Model.

“Together, Youth Solutions and Muskegon ISD are proving what’s possible when communities move from individual school transformation to a countywide strategy, ensuring that every young person, regardless of where they go to school, has the opportunity to graduate with purpose and a clear, actionable plan for their future,” Gretchen Panicucci, Manager of Innovative Services at Youth Solutions and leader of YS Foundations.

Looking Ahead

The Train-the-Trainer Model represents the next phase of YS Foundations, and Muskegon’s CCR team is leading the way. Their commitment to building a culture of career development in schools is a pioneering step toward a future where every Michigan student is empowered to discover their strengths, explore opportunities, and chart their pathway to success.

We’re proud to partner with Muskegon Area ISD on this journey and look forward to sharing the impact of this model as it grows.
