The Jobs for Michigan's Graduates Program at Boys and Girls Club of Greater Southwest Michigan Held Historic Launch Celebration

Middle school students from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Southwest Michigan (BGCSWMI) made history as they were formally inducted into Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) during a Launch Celebration on February 6. The effort broke new ground as the Benton Harbor location became the first Boys & Girls Club nationwide to offer Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) programming. As the state affiliate of the national JAG organization, Youth Solutions was proud to welcome Jan Ennis, JAG’s VP of Operations & Affiliate Relations, as the keynote speaker.

During the celebration, attendees had the opportunity to hear youth speakers and view projects showcasing the outstanding achievements of JMG students in diverse career exploration opportunities, including culinary arts, fashion design, law enforcement, healthcare, and more.

SaTanna Warren, Workforce Development Coach and JMG Specialist at the BGCSWMI, led the celebration and handed out awards while wearing clothing designed by JMG youth who participated in fashion design career exploration over the summer.

"Even though graduation feels like it's far away, exploring different industries and career opportunities at a young age has been so helpful. Knowing that there are so many options available makes me excited about the possibilities for my future,” said Savanna Bates, JMG youth from BGCSWMI and speaker at the event.

Sonya Blanzy, Deputy Director of Youth Solutions, who was present at the event stated, "This celebration was especially exciting because this partnership between Youth Solutions and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Southwest Michigan is the first of its kind. While the Boys and Girls Club already provides invaluable support to youth, this collaboration addresses a crucial need in our community. Middle school students now have the opportunity to explore careers, connect with local employers, and develop the essential 21st Century skills through Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates' specialized curriculum.”
