Meet our August Specialist of the Month: Rosie Teodosio

Specialist of the Month is a new award created this year. The idea of Specialist of the Month came from Youth Solutions team member, Cedric Brooks, to show our specialists how much we love and appreciate them. This recognition is given to Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) Specialists who consistently promote quality JMG program standards, and who have gone above and beyond expectations to help youth overcome barriers and succeed in education, employment and in life.

Meet our Specialist of the Month winner for August, Rosie Teodosio, an Out-Of-School Specialist, from GST Michigan Works!

“Rosie was my Step Into Work Coach, and her smile made me feel relaxed and ready to face anything. Rosie is able to create that same feeling in all of her participants. She helps them to gain confidence, feel a sense of belonging, and that they are valued. Rosie helps our Youth develop into well-rounded, thoughtful and positive young professionals.” - Dominque Clay, Out-of-School Specialist, from GST Michigan Works!

How long have you been a JMG Specialist?

I've been a JMG Specialist with GST Michigan Works! for two years now.

Why did you become a JMG Specialist?

Deciding to become a JMG specialist was a good fit for me. I knew that I would be working with youth, and I wanted to grow in my career, and being a JMG specialist would challenge me to step outside my comfort zone and have a positive impact on today's youth.

What inspires you about your job?

What inspires and motivates me the most is mentoring and watching youth succeed, having them believe in themselves and accomplish what they didn't think they could do, gaining their diploma, furthering their education, and even getting the job they really desired.

Recall a favorite memory about being a specialist. (an event, a youth accomplishment, etc.)

The moment when my youth presented the Legislative Champion Award to Representative Cherry during Legislative Day was very memorable for me. It was impressive not only to see their enthusiasm and the growth of their leadership abilities, but also to see how well they represented themself and their peers within JMG. Hearing them describe their experience afterward and how grateful they were for the opportunity was rewarding.

What is one of the greatest challenges you face in your job?

The greatest challenge that I face as a JMG specialist is when a youth doesn’t believe in themselves, the way that I believe in them.

What is one of the greatest highlights/joys of your job?

The youth and my co-JMG Specialists are my favorite highlights of my job. I enjoy being a JMG specialist because of the individuality of each youth and the way in which they embrace and trust me to guide them to achieve their goals. The inspiration I receive from this motivates me every day to do my very best. The support we give our youth is also a team effort and the joy of knowing we are making a difference is the best feeling of all.

Why do you think JMG is so important for youth?

A youth may not have the support or direction they need in their lives, nor the encouragement they may need to succeed, which is why JMG is so important.

Share your hobbies, do you have any pets, what do you like to do in your spare time, etc. A couple random facts to get to know you better.

My hobbies include crafting and gardening. In my spare time, I like a good Netflix series that I can binge-watch. A couple of random facts about me is that I love 80s music, I have two sassy dogs, I’ve worked in the service industry for 24 years and my favorite color is purple.

Nominations are open to ALL, including our employer partners! If you know a phenomenal specialist, we encourage you to nominate them as our September Specialist of the month.
