At GST Michigan Works, the JMG program has become the model for which we base the rest of our youth programming. Incorporating JMG into our youth services has strengthened our WIOA and PATH programs and provides more intensive and continuous support for our participants. Co-enrollment throughout the programs also allows us to braid funding sources, increasing our spending capacity and promoting long-term programming sustainability.
This presentation is designed to showcase GST’s best practices around co-enrollment, and how we use braided funding to support our JMG programs while still maintaining the JMG brand. We will review the GST’s program delivery design and the various funding sources that we use to support the program (WIOA Youth, WIOA Adult, Young Professionals, PATH and FAE&T). Additional partnership opportunities for leveraged funding will also be discussed including Job Corps, Youth Build, BRES and WIOA Title II Adult Education. We will review where the various programs align and their shared performance goals. We will also discuss pros and cons of co-enrollment and how to manage the risks of Welfare requirements, high WIOA performance expectations, and transient populations.

Explore the use of archery as a project-based learning tool! Mackinaw Trail Middle School's JMG program introduced the sport of archery in several delivery formats during the 2023-2024 program year. Without realizing it, students practiced teamwork, leadership, respect, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, empathy, and safety, all on the archery range. The program presented unique opportunities to grow confidence and self-esteem through this life-long Olympic sport.

Beyond the JMG classrooms that focused on an archery unit over winter 2024, physical education classes and woodworking classes also partnered with JMG staff to incorporate this program into their study. After successful implementation in-school through these in-school models, the school system encouraged the addition of this program to their afterschool course offerings. To support the effort, they agreed to offer two paid positions to JMG students who served as co-leaders alongside their JMG Specialist (aka archery coach). Selected students completed a formal application and interview process, each earning their first paying job. This school has already asked this program to return for fall of 2024.

This presentation will cover training, certification, equipment, space constraints, grants, risk management, and partner organizations available to support this effort. The presentation will also address model services, life skills addressed, and curriculum available to support the program

OOS

While in-school JMG programs have a built-in population to pull from, out of school (OOS) programs draw from a group of youth who are, by definition, disconnected. The very barriers that make youth eligible for our programs are also barriers to connecting with them to offer assistance in meeting their career goals. We don’t have all the answers, but at West Michigan Works!, we have tried several new ideas this year that have met with some success.

In this session, we will start by defining the challenges found when recruiting OOS participants. We will then review some of the things that we have been trying either regionally or in one of our 7 individual programs, to meet these challenges and the results we have seen from these attempts. We will then provide a structured discussion opportunity for all attendees to share their experiences with recruitment efforts.

To create a comprehensive and engaging youth conference, we formed a diverse planning team, including not just JMG staff but also members from Business Services and other programs. This collaborative approach aimed to lighten the workload and incorporate multiple perspectives. We established clear objectives emphasizing youth voice and choice, professional development appropriate for the participants' ages, and an element of fun, including swag.
We assessed our available resources, including MW offices with professional conference rooms, existing workshop content and skilled facilitators, admin staff providing lunch, the Business Service team’s professional connections, and our experience in organizing community and youth events. Additionally, we leveraged existing marketing tools, Survey Monkey, previously acquired swag, and contacts with local high schools and organizations.
By effectively utilizing these resources, we overcame our challenges and incorporated youth input. We decided to open registration to schools, creating the "Dreams to Destinations" event. We meticulously planned marketing materials, schedules, and logistics.
The event taught us valuable lessons: shortening the day could be beneficial, incorporating music and transitional activities would enhance the experience, and a manageable number of 30 youths worked well. For future events, we aim to prepare swag earlier and establish a youth council to assist in planning, potentially expanding the conference over multiple days.
