August's journey with JMG began at the Lansing School District GED program through Capital Area Michigan Works! when she was just 16. Quiet and shy initially, August's potential was immediately recognized by her specialist, Charron Basey, whom August said: “provided a safe and nurturing environment for me to grow”. Through personalized mentorship and guidance, August flourished, embracing opportunities for academic advancement and personal development.
Despite facing challenges, August's determination led her to participate in JMG statewide events. She attended the 2023 Career Development Conference, winning 3rd place with her team in the Creative Problem Solving competition. At Legislative Day 2023, August was able to engage with legislators and share her story with poise and conviction. This newfound confidence led her to speak at her graduation ceremony a few months later.
Armed with the skills she acquired through her time in JMG, this past fall, August embarked on her college education at Lansing Community College (LCC). Since beginning her postsecondary education journey at LCC, she has earned a remarkable 4.0 GPA and has been inducted into the Psychology National Honor Society as well as Phi Beta Kappa for being in the top 10% of all students.
Although she is now a JMG alumna, August continues her involvement with Youth Solutions. She recently became a member of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and returned to Legislative Day this past February, to deliver the opening remarks to the group of JMG youth preparing to meet with their legislators. Her welcome speech to the group was filled with encouragement and she left the group excited for the day, stating, “Seize this opportunity to make your voices heard and inspire change. You're prepared, you're capable, and you're destined for greatness!”
Reflecting on her journey, August attributes much of her success to the support and guidance she received from JMG. August stated, "The atmosphere created by JMG is one of positivity and reassurance. I am eternally grateful for the uplifting support this program has given me!”
August's story is a testament to the resilience, determination, and potential that lie within every youth in Michigan. Her journey serves as an inspiration to us all, and we couldn't be prouder of her remarkable achievements and the exceptional individual she has become. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for August!
